33. Why do people buy utensils on Dhanteras?

The custom is linked to Lord Dhanvantari, who rose from the ocean holding a pot of amrit on this day. A new utensil, especially in steel, brass, copper or silver, is seen as a fresh, auspicious addition to the home.

Yes, as long as it reaches you in time and is genuine. Check the delivery date shown on the product page before you order, buy BIS hallmarked gold, and verify the HUID in the BIS Care app when it arrives.

How Do You Check Gold and Silver Before You Buy?

Gold & Silver Bar

41. Which gold purity is best for Dhanteras?

For coins and bars, 24K (999 or 995) is the usual choice. For traditional jewellery, 22K is most common. For daily-wear and stone-set pieces, 18K and 14K are stronger and hold stones better. Our 24K vs 22K vs 18K vs 14K gold guide compares them.

42. How do I check if gold is hallmarked?

Look for three marks on the piece: the BIS logo, the purity grade (such as 22K916) and a 6-character HUID code. Then enter the HUID in the free BIS Care app to verify it. Our complete guide to gold hallmarking in India explains every step.

43. What is HUID on gold?

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a 6-character code of letters and numbers laser-marked on each hallmarked piece. Since 1 April 2023, BIS-registered jewellers can only sell gold jewellery with a HUID hallmark.

44. How do I verify a HUID?

Download the free BIS Care app, tap "Verify HUID" and enter the code. The app shows the purity, article type, hallmarking date, the jeweller's registration and the hallmarking centre. For newer items, it also shows a photo and the weight.

45. What does 22K916 mean?

It means 22 carat gold with 916 parts of pure gold per 1,000, or 91.6% gold. The rest is other metals that make the jewellery strong enough to wear.

46. Are gold coins hallmarked?

Gold coins and bars are exempt from mandatory hallmarking. Coins from BIS-licensed refineries and mints carry a BIS hallmark with the fineness, such as 999 or 995. Look for the BIS logo, the fineness and the refinery or mint name on the coin.

47. Is silver hallmarking mandatory?

No, silver hallmarking is voluntary. But since 1 September 2025, any silver item that is hallmarked must carry a 6-character HUID, along with the BIS mark with the word "SILVER" and a purity grade such as 925.

48. What is the difference between 925 silver and 999 silver?

999 silver is 99.9% pure, used mostly for coins and bars because it is soft. 925 silver, or sterling silver, is 92.5% silver mixed with other metals so it is strong enough for jewellery. Our guide to sterling silver vs 925 silver explains more.

49. Is gold-plated jewellery okay to buy on Dhanteras?

Gold-plated jewellery is fine for wearing and gifting, but it is not the same as buying gold. If your aim is the traditional Dhanteras purchase of a precious metal, choose solid gold or silver, such as a silver coin or a 925 silver piece.

50. What are making charges on gold jewellery?

Making charges are the cost of designing and crafting the piece, added on top of the gold value. They vary a lot between designs. Plain coins and simple designs have lower making charges than detailed jewellery.

51. Is GST charged on gold and silver?

Yes. GST of 3% is charged on gold and silver jewellery, coins and bars. Check the price breakup on the product page to see the gold value, making charges and GST separately.

52. What should a gold invoice show?

As per BIS rules, the invoice for hallmarked jewellery should show a description of each item, the net weight of gold, the purity in carat and fineness, and the hallmarking charges. HUID on the invoice is not compulsory yet, so ask for it.

53. What can I do if hallmarked gold has lower purity than marked?

Under Rule 49 of the BIS Rules, 2018, the selling jeweller must pay two times the difference in value caused by the purity shortfall, plus testing charges. You can complain through the BIS Care app, manakonline.in or [email protected].

As of 30 October 2026, 24K gold was about 8% higher than on Dhanteras 2025 but about 20% below its record high of 29 January 2026, as per IBJA rates. For exact daily rates, see our Dhanteras gold and silver price trends from 2022 to 2026.

55. Has gold always gone up from one Dhanteras to the next?

From 2022 to 2025, gold was higher at each Dhanteras than at the one before: up about 20%, then 31%, then 65%, as per IBJA closing rates. But 2026 has shown prices can fall sharply too, so past gains don't guarantee future ones.

56. Why are gold prices so volatile in 2026?

Gold hit a record high in January 2026 and then fell sharply. In October, higher oil prices raised fears of inflation and US rate hikes, which weighed on gold. India also raised the import duty on gold and silver to 15% in May 2026.

57. Is silver cheaper this Dhanteras than earlier in 2026?

Yes. As of 30 October 2026, silver was about 52% below its January 2026 record, as per IBJA rates, though still about 7% above last Dhanteras. Silver swings much more than gold in both directions.

58. Is Dhanteras 2026 a good time to buy gold?

59. Why did India raise the import duty on gold in 2026?

On 13 May 2026, India raised the import duty on gold and silver from 6% to 15% to support the rupee and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Import duty is part of the domestic price, so it keeps Indian gold prices higher.

60. Does the gold price change on Dhanteras day?

Gold prices change every day, and sometimes during the day, based on global prices and the rupee. Dhanteras itself doesn't fix the price, though heavy demand can affect premiums and making-charge offers.

61. How do I compare a jewellery price with the gold rate?

Check the day's benchmark rate, then look at the product page's price breakup. It should show the gold value (weight times rate), making charges and GST separately. This lets you compare two pieces fairly.

105. Does the baking soda and aluminium foil method work for silver?

Yes, for plain silver. Placing silver on aluminium foil in hot water with baking soda can lift tarnish. Don't use it on oxidised silver, silver-plated items or pieces with stones or pearls, as it can damage the finish or the settings.

106. How do I clean gold jewellery at home?

Soak gold jewellery in warm water with a few drops of mild soap for 10 to 15 minutes, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and toothpaste.

107. How do I remove kumkum, haldi or oil stains from jewellery after puja?

Wipe the piece with a soft cloth soon after the puja, then wash it in warm, mildly soapy water and dry it completely. Stains are easier to remove before they set.

108. How do I stop silver from tarnishing after Diwali?

Store silver in an airtight pouch or box, away from moisture, perfume and rubber bands. Silver worn often tends to stay brighter. Our guide on whether sterling silver tarnishes explains more prevention tips.

109. How should I store gold jewellery?

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box so pieces don't scratch each other. Keep chains fastened to avoid tangles, and store everything in a dry place.

110. Is it safe to buy gold jewellery online for Dhanteras?

Yes, if you buy from a trusted seller and check the details. Look for BIS hallmarked gold with a clear purity, weight and price breakup, and verify the HUID on arrival. Our guide on whether it is safe to buy jewellery online in India lists more checks.

111. How do I make sure my order arrives before Dhanteras?

Check the delivery date shown on the product page before you order, not after. For Dhanteras on 6 November 2026, order as early as you can, and choose items that show delivery before the festival.

112. What should I check on the product page before buying gold online?

Check the purity (such as 22K or 18K), the net gold weight, the price breakup (gold value, making charges and GST), the size or length, the photos and the return or exchange policy.

113. Can I make the payment during the Dhanteras muhurat?

Yes. Many families treat the moment of purchase as the auspicious act, so they place the order and pay during a muhurat window, even if the piece is delivered later. Others prefer to have the item in hand for the puja.

114. What should I do when my gold order arrives?

Find the three hallmark marks on the piece, verify the HUID in the BIS Care app, and match the purity, item type and weight with your invoice. Do this before you wear it or remove the tags.

115. What if the jewellery size is wrong?

Read the return and exchange policy before you buy, so you know your options. For rings and bangles, measure a piece you already own and match it to the size guide on the product page to avoid this.
